Behalt - Amish and Mennonite Heritage
Paul J. Miller

Berlin,  OH  44610

Behalt is a circular mural, 10 feet x 265 feet, that tells the story of the Amish and Mennonites from their origins in the Reformation, growth in Europe and eventual migration to the New World. The meaning of Behalt is "to keep, to hold, or to remember". The monumental work is the 14-year effort of one artist, the late Heinz Gaugel, a German who settled in Ontario before coming to Holmes County. The center offers guided tours of the mural, a video of the local community and culture, bookstore, displays and gift shop. A Pioneer Barn also houses the Conestoga Wagon used to move many early settlers from Somerset County, Pa., to Ohio and beyond. A restored one-room schoolhouse, predating the Civil War, presents the story of Amish education. Open year round, Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Non-profit.
